Paul Lewis is a fifth-year senior at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, working towards a dual-degree: a BFA in Jazz Studies (trumpet), and a BS in Honors Mathematics, with a minor in Computer Science. Paul plans to pursue a career in math research, and to develop his music career, continuing to be an active musician the rest of his life. Paul’s father and sponsor James, with the US District Courts, went from being a math/computer science major to becoming a law clerk. This slightly unusual career path has taught him to keep his options open. “My father has given me confidence that I will eventually end up in a career where I, too, am truly happy.”
Paul plays trumpet for the Michigan Hockey Band, and in various jazz ensembles on campus. He also runs Ann Arbor’s Academic Games program for high school students, incorporating math, language arts, and social studies content into fun and competitive games. As a former player himself, Paul valued the content not taught in many classrooms_. He greatly enjoys working with these students and expanding their academic horizons.
