Anthony Flaherty is a freshman at the University of Louisville, in Kentucky, working towards a B.S. in Biology with concentration in Cellular Studies & Physiology. After surviving cancer at age nine, along with other illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis and neuropathy, Anthony has been determined not only to overcome his physical obstacles, but to succeed against the odds. His mother and sponsor, Mary, with the SSA, always taught him that "much is expected of those who have much." So, during high school, Anthony logged tens of hours of service every year, and hopes to continue throughout his college years.
“The most important thing one human being can do for another is to serve those in need,” Anthony says. “Whether that entails working in a Social Security office to help the disabled, or working in the medical profession, both jobs are ministries in my eyes.” Anthony loves to cook, travel, and perhaps most surprising, listen to music from the 1950s -1980s. “No one can hold a candle to Frank Sinatra’s The Way You Look Tonight!”
