Emily Braaten (Larson) studies Sociology and Criminology at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston. Emily’s high school placed a heavy emphasis on community service activities. She spent her high school career volunteering at the Women's Care Clinic, a local pro-life pregnancy clinic free to its clients that provides counseling as well as providing items for both the babies and mothers. During the volunteering sessions she was able to hear the guest speakers, and their inspiring life stories that motivated her to help struggling families and children. Now, Emily hopes to become a Social Worker, in a Child Protective Services department of either the State or a privately run social work office.
Emily’s father Brian works for the Social Security Administration, and deals with unemployed and disabled citizens on a daily basis. This, too, has driven Emily to want to have an impact on the lives of those who may not necessarily be able to help themselves, or who may need assistance in doing so. “Public service is a key part of our role as citizens of both our local communities and larger society.”
