FEEA Responds to Haiti Earthquake

FEEA continues to seek information about civilian federal employees stationed in Haiti at the time of last week's earthquake.  As communications improve, we expect to learn much more about the extent of injuries and overall needs of these feds.

Based on reports FEEA has received, we can now confirm one federal employee fatality in Haiti - foreign service officer Victoria DeLong.  Read Secretary of State Clinton's remarks here .

In addition to the State Department and CDC employees mentioned in our original release (below), FEEA is also aware that USAID, APHIS, DEA and DAO had staff affected by Tuesday's earthquake.  It is likely other agencies have also been impacted.  We will continue to provide updates to this information as we receive them.

Lakewood, Colo. (Jan. 14, 2010)-The Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) announced its FEEA Natural Disaster Fund is available to provide grant assistance to civilian federal employees affected by Tuesday's devastating earthquake in Haiti.  At this time, FEEA is aware of 172 U.S. Embassy employees and three CDC employees who were on the island at the time of the quake.  FEEA does not currently have information on the total number of U.S. employees who were working in Haiti on Tuesday, nor do we have information of any serious injuries or fatalities among federal employees, however, property damage was widespread and survivors are still being found and attended to.  Information on the FEEA web site will be updated as additional information is received.

Federal employees needing help can contact FEEA via website by clicking the "Get Help Now " button at the top of the homepage; via e-mail to emergency@feea.org; or via telephone at 1-800-323-4140.  FEEA will provide grant assistance based on need and available funds.

In addition, the NARFE Disaster Relief Fund is available to help federal retiree members of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.  Donations can be made through the FEEA web site or by check made out to "NARFE Disaster Fund" and mailed to FEEA's Lakewood, CO, headquarters.
