Serving Federal Families Since 1986I n the early 1990s, Hurricane Andrew lashed the Florida Coast, ripping apart the homes and livelihoods of countless Americans. Contributions poured in from federal workers across the country, setting a precedent that would repeat many times throughout FEEA’s history – one of tremendous generosity in times of crisis. On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh drove a truck loaded with explosives into the front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, just as its offices and day care center opened for the day. Donations flooded in from around the country, so many in fact, that FEEA was able to pledge a full-tuition, four-year college scholarship for each of the 200 children who lost a parent in the attack. This generosity on the part federal workers - many of whom are not themselves people of means - has persisted through some dozen more hurricanes and natural disasters. On the day of the greatest tragedy in modern American history, September 11, 2001, federal workers once again rallied behind their own. As a result, FEEA again pledged a full college scholarship to each child who lost a federally-employed parent. FEEA was formed because of the needs of federal employees, but we have grown through their generosity. We salute you, federal employees, for your many contributions to FEEA and to the work of our country. |
